FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW senior Andres Cobos, with his 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles on Friday afternoon, has tied former teammate Daniel Kang with 127 career combined victories between doubles and singles, and will look to put his name at the top of the list on Saturday in one of the team's two matches against 42nd ranked Denver and Rose-Hulman.
"A league win is always great, and we played well enough to sweep every single court," said assistant tennis coach Jonathan Batuello. "This win puts us in a good position with confidence heading into a big match-up tomorrow with Denver."
Cobos also currently stands second in career singles wins with 66, behind teammate Martin Muadi, who has 68. In all, five active players (Cobos, Muadi, Gerard Guell, Connor Andrews, and Karl Wangensten-Oye) rank in the top six overall wins in program history.
The win also improves IPFW to 11-10 on the season, and 2-1 in Summit League play.
Guell and Muadi opened the match with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, while Cobos and Daniel Cardenas finished just after with an 8-4 win at No. 2 pairs. To top it off, Andrews and Derek Romer teamed up for an 8-7 (8-6) win at No. 3 doubles to complete the doubles sweep.
In singles, Carlos do Val put IPFW ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, before Guell won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
Cardenas secured the team victory with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, with Cobos' record-tying win coming just after. Muadi (6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles) and Wangensten-Oye (6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles) closed out the shutout win for the Mastodons.
The Mastodons return to action for a doubleheader in which the Mastodons fill face off against 42nd ranked Denver at 2 p.m. before hosting Rose-Hulman at 5 p.m.
