Mastodons Clinch Horizon League Championship Berth

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team clinched the sixth seed in the 2021 Horizon League Championship after a 1-0 loss against Cleveland State on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
It is the Mastodons' first league tournament berth since making the Summit League Tournament in 2013.
The 'Dons entered the final day of the regular season with multiple paths to receiving a postseason berth. After Wednesday's match, both the Mastodons and Vikings earned a spot in the Horizon League Championship. The 'Dons finished the regular season with 14 points, three points ahead of IUPUI, who lost to UIC 2-1 on Wednesday.
Purdue Fort Wayne will head to Highland Heights, Ky. for the quarterfinals against Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 31 (1 p.m.). A Mastodon victory would send the 'Dons to Milwaukee to face the top seeded Panthers on Thursday, Nov. 4.
The Mastodons finish the regular season with a 5-7-6 overall record and a 4-5-2 record in the Horizon League. Cleveland State's record improved to 6-10-2 overall and 5-5-1 in the Horizon League.
After a scoreless first half, the two teams combined for 20 shots in the second half. Cleveland State had multiple early opportunities to score in the second half, including four corner kicks between the 67th and 69th minute. The 'Dons would hold strong, with a save from Samantha Castaneda and defender Isabelle Wissel in the 69th minute. Five minutes later, in the 74th minute, the Vikings would strike with a goal from Mckenna Donahue. Her shot went off the left post and in the net.
The 'Dons would not go down without a fight. Rylee Vruggink put a shot on net in the 82nd minute, but it was kicked away by a Viking defender. In the 84th minute, Marisa Metzger had a chance to score with a shot from the goalkeeper's box, but the shot was saved by Cleveland State's goalkeeper Kyla Valaitis.
The Vikings would out-shoot the 'Dons 14-13 and had a 9-6 shots on goal advantage. Both Morgan Reitano and Bella Reitano led the 'Dons in shots with four. Castaneda had seven saves and allowed one goal.
